Established nearly 20 years, Headley Clay Pigeon Shooting Club (H.C.P.S.C.) offers a great day's shooting for novice through to experienced shooters. Set in a beautiful secluded forest, the grounds include a testing 60 bird English Sporting layout, two Down the Line layouts and a comprehensive tuition area. On offer at the club shop you will find a wide range of accessories from cleaning kits to skeet vests. As main stockists for 'Clever Mirage' they also offer an extensive range of ammunition.
Headley is a friendly family run club that prides itself on an exemplary safety record. Custom-made gift packages can be sent out to the address of your choice. With free beverages and their legendary Greek BBQ being offered at every shoot The Source sent along a novice and complete beginner, to see just how safe and exciting clay shooting could be.
After arriving on a freezing cold Saturday morning, our experience began with an extremely warm welcome from George and his family. The atmosphere was exceptionally relaxed and un-intimidating, regardless of the many more experienced people already enjoying their day. We were offered hot drinks and snacks before our novice joined in with an English Sporting round.
Lee, our instructor, accompanied the entire 10 stands, offering practical advice and tips for hitting the clays and kept the mood jolly with his witty banter and friendly chat. With a selection of firing positions on the clays this layout offers a good variety of challenging and beginner friendly stands - and by varying the position every fortnight Headley ensures that each visit is fresh and presents different challenges. Stopping for a BBQ lunch after the mid-way stand, we gladly refuelled before completing the round.
The great thing about the Headley shoot is how friendly and amiable the people are. The layout was certainly popular but we never felt rushed - and the experienced shooters had plenty of time to spare for the novices. For the complete beginner in our group, Lee completed an Essential Basic Tuition (EBT) and laid to rest any nerves at never having handled a gun before. The safety instructions were clear and concise and delivered in a friendly fashion. It is easy to tell that safety is reassuringly paramount.
The experience as a whole served to remind our novice as to why clay shooting is such an enjoyable sport; in no small part due to the atmosphere of the Headley ground. The beginner in our group, who unashamedly was a sceptic at first, was quickly drawn to try it for herself, and after hitting the clay first time, was hooked.
There's no doubt that we will be returning again on a regular basis to enjoy the shooting as well as the atmosphere.

Can we purchase food and drink on the grounds?
Headley supply food and drink all day with the compliments of the club. They have fresh sandwiches and bread pudding in the morning followed by Effie's legendary Greek BBQ for lunch.
