Vegetarian Sandwich Month
With around four million consumers estimated to be vegetarians, at least in part, the British Sandwich Association has launched a special Vegetarian Sandwich Month as part of its celebrations for the 250th Anniversary of the Sandwich this year.
Although vegetarianism was probably far from the mind of the gambling 4th Earl of Sandwich when he called for some 'cuts of beef' to be brought to him between slices of bread in 1762, the commercial sandwich industry has long recognized the importance of providing vegetarian options for customers.
To mark its Vegetarian Month, the British Sandwich Association has chosen to feature a sandwich created by sandwich designer Ann Houston from Breadwinners sandwich bar in Glasgow for the British Sandwich Designer of the Year Award.
This recipe will feature on posters around the UK.
At the same time, the Association has challenged the sandwich industry around the UK to come up with innovative vegetarian recipes for the month.
During 2011 UK consumers chomped their way through more than 11 billion sandwiches last year, of which the commercial sector accounted for around 25%, which is also positive news for employment as the sector contributes massively to the UK, economy employing well over 300,00 people.
The UK sandwich industry is immensely creative, it has been a real challenge for us to choose which sandwich to feature for the month. Because of the nature of the commercial sandwich market, where consumers are buying sandwiches daily, retailers are constantly striving to come up with new ideas which is, perhaps, why our industry has continued to thrive through the economic downturn. Figures we have received recently show that the UK sandwich market grew by a massive 6% in volume sales last year, despite the rising cost of ingredients.
