Love British Food Family Feasts

Love British Food Family Feasts

Sure Start Children's Centres and care homes for the elderly are making the final preparations for a foodie extravaganza during this summer's Olympic Games.

As part of Love British Food 2012, the campaign being run by British Food Fortnight this summer, Family Feasts are being organised in Sure Start centres and care homes across the country as part of the London 2012 Festival, the spectacular 12-week nationwide celebration running from 21st June until 9th September 2012.

The aim is to give some of Britain's most disadvantaged families and communities, and the elderly, the opportunity to come together to celebrate all the excitement of the Olympic Games.

Many of the Sure Start Children's Centres taking part are in deprived areas and are being given hands-on support from a local chef who is working with centre managers and families to prepare a magnificent Family Feast for everyone using the centre and the wider community.

We are delighted to be working with Love British Food. Food is as much a part of our culture as art, theatre and music and 2012 offers a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Britain's food heritage. Food and sport go hand in hand, so what better way for people to enter into the spirit of the Games than by enjoying Britain's wonderfully diverse and delicious food with their friends, families and communities.

Ruth Mackenzie, Director of the London 2012 Festival

As well as being a huge amount of fun for the families taking part, Love British Food hopesKew Care Home to create a lasting legacy using the excitement of the Olympic Games to establish local networks of mutual support between chefs and Sure Start Children's Centres.

As a means of giving some of Britain's most disadvantaged families and communities the opportunity to come together to celebrate all the excitement of the Olympic Games, the London 2012 Festival Family Feast initiative is second to none.

Bringing families together for a celebratory feast is an excellent way of building social cohesion and strengthening community relations. And if everyone taking part develops greater knowledge of cooking and how to use fresh ingredients from the volunteer chefs supporting this initiative it will leave a strong legacy in Sure Start Children's Centres.

To get the ball rolling, Quality British Turkey is providing every Family Feast with a free box of turkey cuts to help the celebrations get off to a flying start.

Love British Food Family Feasts are taking place in Hallmark Care Homes across Wales, Norfolk, Essex, London and Nottinghamshire and in the following Sure Start Children Centres: -

  • Truro and Roseland Children's Centre in Cornwall
  • Trospacc Children's Centre, Haven Children's Centre and Crookhorn Lane Children's Centre in Hampshire
  • Penhill and Pinehurst Children's Centre in Swindon
  • Broadwater Farm Children's Centre in London
  • Barley Lea Children's Centre, Warwick
  • Stroud Children’s Centre and Compass Children's Centre in Gloucestershire
  • Orchard Vale Children's Centre in Worcestershire
  • Oakenclough Children's Centre in Wilmslow
  • Ormsgill Children's Centre in Cumbria
  • Evenwood Children's Centre in Durham
  • Bierley Children's Centre, The Castle Children's Centre, Holme Wood Children's Centre and Marshlands Children's Centre in Yorkshire

The organisers are encouraging everyone to get involved; you don't have to be a Sure Start Children's Centre or Care Home to take part.

Food and sport go hand in hand so what better way is there of enjoying all the excitement of the Olympic and Paralympic Games than by having a delicious, patriotic Family Feast with your family and friends.
