75 Years On, Remembering the Supermarine Spitfire

75 Years On, Remembering the Supermarine Spitfire

Competition now closed.

Congratulations to Abbey May (Reading).

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, a pivotal moment in World War II when the country stood alone against Hitler's seemingly unstoppable military attempt to destroy Britain's Royal Air Force. The Supermarine Spitfire was the most famous plane of World War II.

Its ground-breaking combination of speed, manoeuvrability and fire power turned it into a formidable fighting machine that was superior in every department to anything that was in the sky and essentially helped win the battle.

The enduring legacy of the Supermarine Spitfire still captivates many, and due to some dedicated individuals, the last few remaining examples can still stir the emotions and connect us many, to those few, who gave so much in their finest hour.

With only 55 of the 20,351 spitfires remaining, World War II historian Robin Brooks tells us how this virtually invisible weapon's role in the Battle of Britain cannot be underestimated and why it’s still remembered as a much loved British icon today. Taking to the air to mark these historic events in celebration 75 years on.
