Discover a Great Place to Meet in the The Green Rooms of Godstone
Living out of town and 'in the sticks' can pose an obstacle or two when you are looking for a great little place to grab a coffee, take a break away from the office or organise an informal business meeting or work-related chat.
Whilst London has an abundance of pop-in places, Surrey has an enormous amount of country pubs but finding ones that stock soya and free-from cakes presents more of a challenge.
So, when I met with our printers for a chat over coffee and cake it was a sheer delight to be welcomed into The Green Rooms of Godstone.
Having just celebrated their first birthday, this little gem set in the center of the village is a paradise for any free-from follower. The Tardis effect is very much in operation as this modestly fronted tearoom opens to expose an ample seating area and spacious layout. In such a small village, the addition of car parking spaces to the rear are an absolute asset, leaving you free to relax and catch-up.
Co-owner Jeremy, who runs The Green Rooms of Godstone with his wife Sylvia, was on hand with a genuine welcome and table service; no queuing at the counter, we were invited to find a seat and we would be served as such.
After countless caffeinations when asking for decaf and being lactosed when requiring dairy-free it takes some time to get used to not being so cautious but Jeremy assured me that I need not ask more than once and that the cake and coffee were 'safe' to consume.
Their homemade free-from orange and almond cake is divine. Made using only four ingredients and natural flavourings from the actual fruit, the cake contains no preservatives or additives.
With so many cakes on offer it is good to know that even on my gluten- and dairy-free diet I don't feel like an outsider. I didn't have to repeat myself (although I did) and I didn't get any odd looks when I asked for a soya latte.
Our quick coffee and cake turned into a very comfy two-hour chat, relaxing on sofas and enjoying the rare glimpse of some winter sunshine. My only regret is that we left before lunch but we can certainly remedy this now we know where to go.
