A Foodie Double Bill with Restaurant Critic and One Show Regular Jay Rayner
The Taste Cumbria Food Festival, held in Cockermouth 29th - 30th September 2012, will serve up food and drink from over a hundred of Cumbria's best producers, hoteliers and restaurateurs.
Saturday Kitchen Chef James Martin and Sunday Brunch Star Simon Rimmer will be headlining the festival cookery theatre.
On the evening of Saturday the 29th September, Jay Rayner, Restaurant Critic for the Observer will be hosting a food lover's double bill in a special marquee at the Trout Hotel.
Jay has been the restaurant critic for the Observer for over a dozen years and in that time he's learnt that, while people may like reading restaurant reviews, what they really love are the stinkers.
In My Dining Hell, Jay will talk about why we love reading bad reviews, read from some of the very worst he has ever experienced on our behalf and, to balance things, give you a few excerpts of some truly lousy reviews of his own work. He’ll also be taking questions from our hungry audience.
Jay's fascination with how and what we eat is renowned.
Less well known is his love affair with jazz piano; a passion which, he admits, has not always been requited.
In the second half of this double bill Jay will talk about the music that has shaped his life, his flirtations with electro pop in the 80s, why he was drummed out of a blues band made up entirely of writers and, accompanied by a few of Britain's best jazz musicians, will play some of his favourite numbers including, especially for Taste of Cumbria, a selection of food and drink related tunes.
Join Jay for an hour of anecdote, reflection and what he promises will, at the very least, be enthusiastic playing of some great music.
As Jay says, "If you know nothing about jazz piano, I'm terrific. If you know anything at all, thank you for coming."
