Eating Out and Entertaining the Kids in Thanet

During our recent visit to Margate we were delighted to dine at a couple of great restaurants the local area had to offer, as well as pay a visit to the Powell-Cotton Museum at Quex Park. These are the very places that will help to put Thanet back on the map.

The Ambrette Restaurant is one of the most popular places to eat for visitors to Margate town, with executive chef Dev Biswal using a delicate blend of flavours and spices to create his unique culinary art - using traditional recipes from India. Quex HouseThe Ambrette goes a long way in supporting others as much as they can - both in the local community and in the developing world.

The flavours on offer in a range of superb dishes is second to none and we have to say that this is probably one of the best restaurants we have eaten in. From the outside you would be forgiven for thinking it was just a converted pub, but once inside you will be delighted by the high level of customer service and dishes served.

Further along in Minnis Bay you will find The Minnis Bar & Restaurant. Another ideal location with beautiful sea views, yet from the outside the restaurant has the look of a holiday camp café. Do not let this exterior dissuade you from venturing inside because in here you will find people with a passion for food, for the local environment and for supporting their community.

Chef-patron Jason Freedman's main area of interest lies in seafood and meat-based dishes. He is also passionate about fresh local produce and carefully sources his ingredients from local suppliers to ensure quality, as well as to support the community. Another of the things that makes The Minnis of Kent so special is that they cure, pickle, brine, salt and smoke their own produce on site. The Minnis has become known as the place to go to find first class, full-flavoured English cuisine - with a difference.

For a whole day out experience a visit to Quex Park and the Powell-Cotton Museum is a must-do! Take a look at a few of the rooms that are open and on show in Quex House. The late-Victorian Oriental Drawing Room is home to a stunning collection of carved wood furniture. The House is complete with extensive gardens and grounds, and the walled garden is full to the brim with fruit and vegetables growing in abundance.

The Powell-Cotton Museum is home to one of the most unique and fascinating collections in the UK. Major Percy Powell and his family lived at a time when bold adventure and dangerous expeditions into the unknown were only embarked upon by the brave and privileged. The Powell family's natural history collections are brought to life in truly astounding dioramas.

We recommend you do not rush your visit and allow all day for the experience of both the museum and house. A great day out encompassing a fascinating look at history in a really delightful setting.
