Fundraising Handbag Sale to Supports Women's Cancer Charities
In August 2011, Alison Coombs saw an advert in a weight watchers magazine for Women V Cancer Cycle Challenges - India .
Having just lost 5 stone herself and with cancer having touched her family, Alison signed up.
An incredibly emotional journey, lots of tears, lots of laughs and very sore bottoms ensued, as 88 women cycled through India - camping and pulling together to raise money to help other women.
Each participant had to raise £2,800 and then pay about £1,000 each for the flights, taxes and other expenses. Alison managed to raise £3,500.
In November 2012 Alison completed the challenge, having trained hard for over a year.
And now she is hooked...
This time the challenge is on to cycle 400km across the Caribbean island of Cuba.
The Cycle Challenges are organised and managed by Action for Charity and this challenge will be a journey full of fun, friendship and incredible support, as women of all ages and from all walks of life challenge themselves for an amazing cause.
This fantastic challenge is a great opportunity to get fit, lose weight and have an experience of a life time, whilst raising significant funds to help in the fight against breast, ovarian and cervical cancers.
Funds raised by Women V Cancer will be divided equally between three important charities: Breast Cancer Care, Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action and used to support their valuable work.
Action for Charity is also supporting cancer care in Cuba, so £50 of the funds raised by each individual will be added to a donation from Action for Charity and used to fund a project helping women fight cancer in Cuba.
On Saturday 1st June 2013, from 2pm - 5pm at Warlingham Village Hall in Surrey, Alison will kick-start her 2014 fund-raising with a Charity Handbag Sale.
So, I've now signed up to Cycle Cuba in 2014, and again I'm fundraising. This handbag sale is the first event that I have thought of so far! I have been asking for people to donate any handbags that they no longer use and are willing to give away to a good cause. This has mainly been done on Facebook and through Freecycle - I currently have about 50 handbags to sell; as well as shoes, boots, scarves, belts and jewellery.
Along with donating handbags and accessories, people are also baking cakes and biscuits to be sold with tea and coffee on the day - and Alison is looking for prizes for a fundraising raffle.
