Perking Their Way Across the UK with a Fabulous Range of PERK!ER Gluten Free Breakfasts
2013 was a landmark year for young self-funded start up company PERK!ER Foods, with co-founders Ann and Steve spreading word of their gluten-free foods and breakfast cereals far and wide across the UK.
And the response from all their #perking fans will certainly go towards taking this same company to new heights for 2014 - and of course, their fabulous PERK!ER products might also lend a hand!
We originally discovered PERK!ER a few years ago and immediately fell in love with their Fruity Berry Porridge. The aroma alone had us wanting more, from the moment we first opened the box and the taste kept us going to the very last drop.
Following the porridge review, we got down to some serious chow time with their Red Berry and Fruity Flakes. Again the flavours won hands down and even though the Fruity Flakes were on the high end of our sugar scale, at least it was coming from a natural source and still within the guideline limits.
So for 2014 we see a lot more happening with this now established company and it was a real delight to finally try their Golden Syrup Porridge Pots. Made with gluten-free oats and delicious golden syrup, the porridge pots are high in fibre, low in saturated fats and keep you fuller for longer. Made from all natural ingredients, we love these 'pop in your bag and take with you' pots as they make staying gluten-free and eating breakfast so much more accessible for anyone in a morning rush.
Just add hot water and you are ready to go! Perfect for a mid morning pick up, late night nibble or tasty sweet treat. Don't relegate them to the breakfast bar - these golden wonders are ideal whatever the time of day.
And now with the addition of their newer flavours PERK!ER have expanded their range and offer a Gingerbread & Raisin Porridge and a completely oat-free Apple, Cinnamon & Raisin Porridge.
The Gingerbread & Raisin does not hold back on the ginger and the box is packed full of gluten-free oats, raisins and gingerbread pieces. The ginger dominates the overall flavour and as a cereal it was a bit too heavy on this for our taste buds but ginger-lovers everywhere will be over the moon. What it does make though is great gingerbread cookie. We simply added some brown sugar and oil and blended together before popping in the oven for 10 minutes on Gas Mark 7. Wait for them to cool and enjoy!
Going oat-free with porridge is a brave move for any company since porridge is oats to many people. PERK!ER have created their completely oat-free porridge by mixing it up with millet and buckwheat flakes. More 'Ready Brek' than 'Scot's Porridge Oats' in consistency, the oat-free Apple, Cinnamon & Raisin Porridge offers a porridge-like breakfast to those who cannot tolerate oats. Unfortunately for us it wasn't high on our list of favourites, not considering the rest of the range with its amazing flavours.
You can eat your PERK!ER porridge in a variety of ways, including making your own Bircher Muesli. Simply cover your porridge mix with milk and leave it to soak overnight, before adding fresh fruit pieces and yoghurt. Top with a drizzle of honey for a great breakfast alternative.
And the next time you are cooking with the kids make your own gluten-free cornflake cakes with the Red Berry Flakes. Melt 150g of chocolate and mix in 125g of Red Berry Flakes. Spoon into paper cases and leave to set in the fridge before sharing them around.
Adults will love them too and if you are looking for a sweet treat simply take the same mix and press it into a square tin. Allow the chocolate to harden before cutting the cakes into squares. Wrap them individually in clingfilm or greaseproof paper and pop them in a lunch box for elevenses at work.
