Gluten Free Magic from Delicious Alchemy

Delicious Alchemy is dedicated to improving the quality of food for those with coeliac disease. From cake and bread mixes to tasty breakfast options, Delicious Alchemy create better, fresher, more delicious gluten free food.

Although the company started from a walk in a wheat field over 10 years ago, we only discovered Delicious Alchemy at the BBC Good Food Eat Well Show earlier this year. And the gluten- and dairy-free brownie samples we tried at their stand had us hooked in minutes! So when we were given the chance to try out a selection of Delicious Alchemy mixes we were delighted.

Our first choice was obviously the Chocolate Brownie Mix - indulgent rich and fudgy, packed with 15% dairy-free dark chocolate chips. An exceptionally easy preparation meant we simply had to melt some dairy-free spread and add it to the packet mix, with two large eggs. After 18 minutes in the oven we had our very own gooey, gluten- and dairy-free brownies - that didn't really get much of a chance to cool down. We like walnuts in our brownies so added these into the mix before putting it into the oven.

The Oaty Cookie Mix was just as easy to prep and needed no more than some dairy-free spread and water. After a quick mix we separated the 'dough' into ten small balls and patted then down on some greaseproof paper. Delicious Alchemy White Bread MixIn less than 20 minutes we had oaty cookies cooling on a rack - and they didn't last very long at all either.

When it comes to home baking it is nice to take some time out and enjoy the experience of cooking from scratch - but every now and again you just want a really quick fix, and Delicious Alchemy have the perfect product for this if you are gluten-free.

We also sampled their Quick Cook Original Porridge Oats. Three minutes in the microwave with some rice milk added and we had a hot bowl ready to eat. A bit of jam on top is a good sweetener for oats, that are more often than not very bland without the creaminess of full fat milk or loaded with sugar. Red berries make a great alternative topping too.

Finally we took the plunge and tried to make our own gluten-free bread with the Delicious Alchemy White Bread Mix. In all honesty, bread has never been good for us, and having a gluten-free bread mix that actually half resembles a loaf of bread is a difficult find.

When we mixed this up we were not really taken with the consistency or feel of the dough but in the interest of following through we left it to rest as instructed. We didn't use a mixer, simply beat and kneaded the mix for a while by hand. And although the room wasn't warm enough where we left it to rise, this fantastic mix still popped out of the oven after 90 minutes and presented us with a nifty little loaf, cooked to perfection.

In order of choice we were surprised to find the White Bread Mix was up there with the Chocolate Brownies.
