Make Your Own Perfect Steak Pie Filling
If you enjoy a deep filled, meaty steak pie but are at a loss when it comes to home baking, or just haven't found the perfect pie for that homemade meal, look no further.
This recipe will make a delicious filling for your steak pie and is great on its own, or with added vegetables or mushrooms to taste.
You can make individual pasties or pop it all into a pie dish and top with pastry, fabulous for any day of the week.
Serves 4 and is suitable for home freezing.
Ingredients
- 450g braising steak
- 15g vegetable fat
- 1 onion, chopped
- 500ml beef stock
- 2 tbsp cornflour
- Salt and pepper to season
Procedure
- Heat the vegetable oil in a pan over a high heat until melted.
- Add the meat slowly browning each handful as it is added.
- Add the onion and cook for 2-3 minutes until they soften.
- Pour in the stock and reduce the heat.
- Cover and cook for 1.5 to 2 hours or until the meat is very tender and soft.
- Blend the cornflour with 3tbsp of cold water to form a liquid paste.
- Add to the meat while still hot and stir until thickened.
- Season with the salt and pepper and allow to cool.
You now have the perfect meaty pie filling and can add cooked chopped, cubed potatoes - vegetables - or add mushrooms at the same time as the onion for the filling you want.
