A Midsummer Night's Dream

A Midsummer Night's Dream

The Pell Mell Theatre Company perform 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' at the prestigious New Diorama Theatre in August 2011, for seven performances as part of the Camden Fringe Festival.

Led by its 19 year old director Natalie York, (Picnic Basket Productions: Director, New Sussex Opera: Assistant Director) Pell Mell Theatre Company's bold and refreshingly funny take on Shakespeare's best loved play brings the enchanted Athenian forest straight to the heart of Camden.

The course of true love becomes rather bumpy for the criss-crossed and double crossing lovers who run away from home and straight into trouble. As fairies battle in the treetops and an amateur dramatics troupe gets more than they bargained for in their leading man, this midsummer nightmare can only last so long before people start to wake up...

Taking inspiration from sources as disparate as the comedies of Aristophanes and the visual aesthetic of the Ballet Russes, this highly ambitious production will be interspersed with moments that explore the music of Purcell's 'The Fairy Queen', a masque based on Shakespeare's text.

In a play where the magical and the mundane collide to such dramatic effect, our aim more than anything is to expose the humanity of the gods of fairyland and reveal the divine in a weaver or a bellows-mender.
