The Menstrual Solution that's Economical, Eco-Friendly, Convenient and Healthy
Now you can forget tampons because Femmecup, the greener, healthier, economical and convenient future of feminine hygiene is here!
Femmecup is a soft reusable menstrual cup worn internally, just like a tampon, except it collects menstrual flow instead of absorbing it. And with endless benefits, Femmecup is more eco-friendly, healthy, cost effective and convenient than tampons or pads.
When we discovered Femmecup at the Natural and Organic Trade Show 2013 we were intrigued to find out more about and discuss how this little silicon cup could make one of life's necessities a little easier.
How Does it Work?
Femmecup forms a gentle seal with your vaginal walls and any flow is contained in the cup. It is then simply removed, emptied into the toilet, rinsed with water and then reinserted. Femmecup is non-absorbent so it can be left in place for up to 12 hours with no risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome.
Although you may want to empty it more on heavier days and less often on light ones it really is your personal choice, as long as you always keep to the 12 hour rule. In between periods your Femmecup should be sterilised either by boiling in water for 2-4 minutes or rinsing with sterilising fluid such as Milton.
Femmecup holds up to 30ml, that's 3 times more than tampons or towels can absorb and it is easy to insert and remove. Since it is reusable it lasts around five years, which makes it highly cost effective.
The average woman uses 11,000 tampons and pads in her lifetime and this waste and the associated packaging all end up flushed down the toilet or dumped in landfill sites. Femmecup produces no waste at all so you can imagine the difference women could make to the environment if they all use a Femmecup instead.
We asked a member of our team to put Femmecup to the test and they were delighted with the results...
The Femmecup is preferable to other sanitary items because not only is it eco-friendly, it is more cost effective, healthier and holds more that regular tampons.
When I tested it I found the instruction for use exceptionally clear and easy to follow. Initially it took a while to find the right fold for insertion and also a little manoeuvring to secure the most comfortable position for wear - but once achieved it felt totally secure and in place. You will recognise and learn what works for you as an individual but it is most definitely worth the initial perseverance.
It does feel slightly unusually (and makes a popping noise) when it first unfolds internally and I assume this is most likely due to the Femmecup creating the necessary seal needed to prevent leaks. There is no risk or worry about creating an internal vacuum because the Femmecup has four little holes around the rim, that are too small to cause leaks but big enough to let air through to prevent this. And there is also no risk of it getting lost.
I found removal easily achieve by pinching the base as opposed to pulling the stem due to the stem feeling slightly too thin to grasp. The pinching method also allows for a more controlled release of the seal and removal. A little 'wiggle' motion worked for me and kept the contents in the cup ready to clean, without spillage.
Cleaning is simple; just empty the contents into the toilet on removal before adding a little soap and running it under the tap, ensuring you rinse well before re-insertion.
The great thing is that you do not need to have a different Femmecup for different levels of menstrual flow. The same cup can be used for heavier or lighter periods and if you start off heavier and usually change to a less absorbent tampon then Femmecup deals with this all the same.
While getting to grips with my Femmecup I have continued to use sanitary towels as I get used to the correct fit but for me this is the way forward and I will not be returning to tampons.
If you are uncomfortable with the sight of your own blood then I think this may not be the solution for you but if you want to end those miserable moments when you know you have 'sprung a leak' then the Femmecup is the one for you!
