The British Jumping Derby Meeting (20th - 23rd June 2013)
The British Jumping Derby is one of the most famous equestrian events in the world. Founded in 1960 by the late Douglas Bunn, it is the only competition that sees riders take on the front descent of the infamous Derby Bank, the biggest of its kind to be found anywhere in the world.
It is an iconic event, that makes heroes of its human and equine stars, and in which the course itself is as famous as the horses and riders that embark upon it. No other event in the world asks this much of its entrants, and no other course creates this type of drama.
As well as the famous Derby, the British Jumping Derby Meeting also hosts a full range of senior national showjumping classes, with something for nearly every calibre of affiliated rider.
The British Jumping Derby Meeting also plays host to many Horse of the Year Show showing qualifiers, a polo exhibition match and carriage driving. Hickstead's famous Mini Challenge too must not be overlooked; as the starting point of many of today's leading riders, it is the place to discover the stars of tomorrow.
In short, the British Jumping Derby Meeting showcases equestrian talent from nearly every age and ability, and is a must for any horse-lover!
Sunday 23rd June - The British Jumping Derby
Sunday is of course Derby Day...
This year will be the 53rd running of the world famous British Jumping Derby, and it is a true testament to the difficulty of the course that there has been only 55 clear rounds in all of that time.
One journalist recently declared "forget about the 28 fences that Grand National runners have to leap over at Aintree, these are child's play when compared to Hickstead's monsters!"
Only three people have won the class four times in its long history, and still no one has managed to beat, or even match, Eddie Macken's unbelievable four consecutive wins on the same horse, the legendary Boomerang, set way back in the 70s.
Paul Beecher made history last year by being the first ever rider to jump a clear round having been drawn first to go in the competition, and went on to win it to boot! But in a class so famous for its thrills and spills, anything is possible.
So come down and enjoy the spectacle, and take part in the public course walk, accompanied by a magnificent marching band, one of the only chances anywhere in the world to get up close and personal with a famous course and the riders who hope to conquer it.
