HEART UK's National Cholesterol Week launches this week, from the 14th October 2013, and is committed to raising awareness about the dangers of high cholesterol.
Six in ten adults have high cholesterol in the UK and around one in 500 people have very high cholesterol, caused by a condition called FH (Familial Hypercholesterolaemia) that, if left untreated, can lead to a heart attack.
Avoiding saturated fat is one of the best ways to improve your cholesterol level but it can be very difficult for an individual to avoid entirely as it is found in so many foods. The key to a happy heart is a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet and oily fish is one of many food groups that help to lower cholesterol.
By substituting high saturated fat meals for a fish dish, especially oily fish which is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, you are not only cutting your saturated fat intake, but potentially helping to improve your heart and circulatory health because of all the other heart health benefits that fish provides.
